Moderated by Knight PiĆ©sold’s Neelam Parbhoo, the webinar topics were definitely a drawcard for attendees. First up was Professor Charis Harley, an academic based at the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg. In her presentation Professor Harley discussed the topics, ‘Does the Academy drive/diminish innovation?’ ‘What is the role of data science in innovation and product development?’ and ‘Education as a driver of innovation’. She also mentioned that data science allows for strong links to social science.

Professor Harley was joined by Bennie Vorster, who is currently leading a unique and dynamic rail consulting/design team at Hatch that supports clients globally from the Hatch Johannesburg office. Bennie is the Regional Director for the Rail Business Unit in Africa, Europe and Middle East (AEM). He discussed ‘Strategies that companies #consultingengineers can adopt to encourage innovation and the use of tech in the design process’. In his discussion, Bennie mentioned innovation should be adopted companywide and staff should be passionate about execution, as innovation is a cornerstone of the future.

The third speaker was Keith Katyora, an electrical engineer, and currently the Outcome 3 Deputy Lead for the USAID Southern Africa Energy Program, that works to advance energy policy and regulatory reform as well as accelerate investment to increase power generation and access to electricity throughout the region. Keith’s topic was ‘Why innovation is all about people rather than bright ideas: Perspective into the Engineer of the Future’.

Disclaimer

This publication is an attempt to share information of interest with members and readers.
