The delegation included current CESA President Neresh Pather, Immediate Past President Lynne Pretorius, Past President Abe Thela and CEO Chris Campbell. Taking into account that the budget against which the Committee had to decide, had shrunk, notwithstanding the arguably counterproductive effects of reduced spending on infrastructure, CESA shared information with the Committee on how it could derive efficiencies in its Infrastructure spend even with a reduced budget. While this is positive recognition of the CESA QMS, member firms are cautioned that CESA may not issue a letter verifying a company’s implementation of the CESA QMS unless the QMS Questionnaire included with their Annual Declaration has been diligently and plausibly completed.

Firms are reminded that it is a mandatory CESA membership requirement that firms implement a recognised QMS. The CESA Quality, Risk & Sustainability Committee is currently looking at the upgrading of the CESA QMS such that it is auditable and linking it to a CESA QMS certificate.

Marketing & Events

CESA Infrastructure Indaba 2018 - "Engineering the Future Now!" - We would like to thank all who attended the 2018 CESA Infrastructure Indaba that was recently held at the Southern Sun OR Tambo International, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Aon South Africa for their continued sponsorship of these prestigious Awards. Over 40 entries met our stringent criteria and have been accepted into the Awards this year. Adjudication is now in progress and you should have received your invitations to reserve your company’s tables for the Awards ceremony. If you need to book more tables or individual seats you are most welcome to go online to www.cesa.co.za/awards or email Bonolo@cesa.co.za.

CESA YPF 2018 Job Shadowing Initiative - Members are advised that the Annual 2018 Job Shadowing Initiative will once again take place over a period of three months – May, June and July this year. With the theme of ‘A Day in the Life of a Consulting Engineer’ member firms are encouraged to provide learners with an experience like no other. The goal of the CESA YPF Job Shadowing Initiative is to expose and entice school Learners to embrace the field of Engineering, but more so to pursuing a career in Consulting Engineering. By exposing these learners to the exciting field of engineering, they get a chance to imagine, live, work and play engineering – opening their minds to a world of possibilities and opportunities. Furthermore, this year participating firms may either submit a single entry - pre-entry form and poster - by firm or multiple entries by regional offices. We hope that this change to the entry criteria will encourage competition between regional offices of larger firms and encourage participation by smaller firms.

Upcoming Events 2018

EVENT

DATE

Young Professionals Sustainability Imbizo
Gauteng

14-15 August

CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards
Gauteng

15 August

CESA Relay
Riversands Farm, Fourways

15 September

Presidential Golf Challenge
Johannesburg Country Club

19 October

To view the full Events Calendar please visit http://www.cesa.co.za/node/13

Contractual Affairs, Procurement & Membership

IPDM Training Seminars – These training seminars have been placed on hold pending the outcome of a meeting between the Chief Procurement Officer, National Treasury, and the CESA President and CEO, to determine Treasury’s view wrt to the future of the Standard for Infrastructure Procurement & Delivery Management (SIPDM).

CESA Forms of Agreement – These very reasonably priced and popular, tried and tested, and up-to-date contract documents are now available online. Herewith a selection of these articles that have been published:

CESA concerned with increase in irregular expenditure, remains committed to partner with government and the AG's Office

CESA is concerned about the 75% increase in irregular municipal expenditure, from R16, 212 billion in the previous year to R28, 376 billion in the year under review, as reported in the recent Auditor General’s report. This despite the slowdown in investment by Government and general economic conditions not facilitating growth in the sector with investment by government showing the biggest decline in 2017 since the financial crisis of 2009/2010. Start by admitting you have had an unfair advantage
If you are white it can be difficult to see the privilege you have been born into — simply because you’re in it. The most important thing to understand about white privilege is to understand what it’s not. Privilege is not the same as wealth. When we hear the word "privilege" we automatically think of pampered rich people who live lives of ease and extravagance, and that’s simply not the experience of all white South Africans. The City of Johannesburg built the bridge after establishing that over 10 000 people walk across the Grayston off ramp each day – in a situation which was neither safe nor quick. It was funded by the national government’s Public Transport Network Grant and is part of the roll out of the Rea Vaya project committed to bringing high quality public transport that is safe, affordable and reliable to the people of Johannesburg.

WSP helps bring emergency desalination plant online - WSP, played a key role in the fast-tracked development of the City of Cape Town V&A desalination plant, feeding 2 megalitres of fresh water per day into the city’s network (Construction World, 15 May 2018)

Partnership to benefit engineering students - Aurecon recently teamed up with ‘Engineers Without Borders South Africa’ (EWB-SA) to teach engineering students about Afrikan Design Innovation, which fuses the technical and creative worlds to find the “sweet spot” where innovation can flourish. Currently “all municipal managers are appointed on short term contracts offering no career path, and non-competitive reward trends”.
