Objectives should be established in consultation with relevant stakeholders as identified in the planning phase of the project. Objectives should consider project type and location and indicators should measure achievement against other projects/benchmarks. Sustainability objectives must be documented and tracked to demonstrate, to relevant stakeholders, the level of success in achievement of these objectives.

Examples of objectives and indicators:

- Energy - minimise the use of energy through efficient but effective design, consider renewable energy and energy sources with no carbon emissions, assess availability and affordability, consider impacts on other sustainability issues (e.g. greenhouse gas emissions), allow for the measurement of consumption to assist in behavioural changes.
Example: % energy savings.
- Water - minimise net water use and avoid water losses, consider recycling / harvesting / use of grey water, assess availability and affordability, allow for the measurement of consumption to assist in behavioural changes.
Example: % water savings.
- Materials - minimise use of non-renewable materials and consider recyclability of materials, source renewable / recycled / durable materials, use of low embodied carbon materials, minimise and dispose of waste safely.
Example: Waste diversion %
- Environment - preserve the environment and consider physical, chemical, biological and ecological factors, identify required authorisations and incorporate requirements and mitigation measures into the project life cycle.
Example: Follow the project EMP
- Health and Safety - preserve and improve the health and safety of the workforce, community and users of the project, incorporate health and safety specifications and requirements into the project life cycle.
Example: Follow the health and safety risk protocols
- Human Rights - preserve human rights specific to project development and measure impacts on food, shelter, law, culture and development, considering substitutions or compensations where impacts cannot be avoided.
Example: Follow project EMP, public participation, etc.

The Standard Operational Procedure of Element specifies that the designer must ensure compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and the Construction Regulations. Therefore an Environmental Consultant and Health and Safety Consultant are appointed to investigate the impact of a project on the environment and on the health and safety of the public and construction workers. Items identified during Stage 1 dealing with sustainability are further developed and investigated during this stage. THe use of energy efficient construction methods, alternative energy sources especially in building projects are investigated and discussed with the Client. The recycling/re-use of water is investigated and the impact of this on stormwater systems are investigated.

The appointed Environmental Consultant must ensure compliance with environmental approval process in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, (NEMA). The environmental approval process can either be in the form of a Basic Assessment Report (BAR) or Scoping and Environmental Impact Reporting (SEIR). From the environmental approval process, an Environmental Management Plan is developed to minimise the impact of the project on the environment.
The design is developed in detail, taking into consideration sustainability requirements such as energy efficient construction methods, harvesting of rainwater and stormwater for re-use, purification of stormwater on site to minimise the impact on down-stream watercourses.
The H&S Consultant in cooperation with the designer identify H&S risks and methods to minimise the risks. A project specific H&S specification.
