The last two weeks have very busy for me as I try to catch up. From an access to finance point of view the Nepad Business Foundation had a very interesting meeting with its different sector heads. The SADC Banking Association did a presentation on their activities with regard to PPP's and the Pan African Infrastructure Fund (PAIDF) did a presentation on their newly created fund of US $625 Million that will be used to promote the building and rehabilitation of infrastructure in Africa. Both presentations confirmed that Africans countries are very keen to lessen their dependency on the donor fraternity for finance, and have started to do something about it, the PAIDF plan to increase the fund to US $ 1.5 Billion. Current investors in the Bank include the DBSA, African Development Bank, ABSA and the Government Pension Funds of South Africa and Ghana. The process of including other African Government Pension funds is at an advanced stage and the PAIDF expect to make announcements in this regard early next year.

The level of activity around PPP's in SADC was also very interesting. The Bank Association has moved from focusing on capacity building to also taking equity in certain projects. Consulting Engineers who are active in Africa may want to take note of the fact that they have a very successful online capacity building training programme in PPP's. This has been so successful that they have trained in 22 African countries, with a client in the Caribbean as well. If members are interested in learning more about the above, please contact me at (011) 463-2022, or e-mail me on roelofvt@saace.co.za.

Roelof van Tonder

I attended a DEKRA Quality Management System (QMS) course on the 18th and 19th September 2007. It was very informative and well worth attending. An interesting aspect of the course was the Quality Management Systems - Guidelines for performance improvements (ISO 9004:2000 IDT), that breaks the ISO 9001:2000 (QMS - requirements) into sections and then explains each section and how it should be interpreted and implemented. You can buy this guideline as either a hard copy or a PDF copy from the SABS website.(https://www.sabs.co.za/Business_Units/Standards_SA/WebStore/search/quicksearch.aspx).

LLLS News

- Quality Management - (1 Credit): 15/11/07 in East London & 7/11/07 in Polokwane

- Human Recourse Management in a Consulting firm - 23/10/07 - Kyalami

- DVD Engineers in Practice - ECTV, through the South African Association of Consulting Engineers (SAACE) brings you 10 hours of e-learning programs which will ensure that you attain your 1 compulsory credit in Category 1.
