<LI>Just returned from my successful <STRONG>13th GAMA
AGM and Convention held in the historic town of
Bagamoyo in Tanzania.</STRONG> The content was good
and it was well attended especially by South Africa
who had 16 representatives with 3 speakers. The GAMA
AGM proved to be rather problematic but in the end
some good decisions were taken especially regarding
the structure of GAMA which, if approved, will be an
exact replica of the way FIDIC works. This can only
improve the performance of a rather under-resourced
organisation. FIDIC also has a special Task Team
looking at ways to support Africa and its Member
Associations of which I am a member - this has greatly
assisted us in understanding the problems facing
Consulting Engineers and their respective
organisations on the continent. Copies of papers are
available on request from Jean Stanford at this
office. As an aside, Bagamoyo was the centre of slave
trade in East Africa going back to the 2nd century, it
was also the place where Livingstone's body
overnighted before being transported to Zanzibar for
burial in Westminster Abbey. Next year GAMA will be
held in Botswana at a venue still to be decided and I
can only recommend attendance if you are interested in
working across the border. It is a wonderful
networking opportunity and if you don't believe me you
can speak to any of the attendees - I can give you a
list. <BR><BR>

<LI><STRONG>SAACE North West branch visits</STRONG> -
The branch visits to the NW took place on the 29th and
30th March 2006. Ben Smith of Glenrand MIB and myself
attended. Ben did a presentation on the OH&S
Regulations 2003, while I discussed matters pertaining
to the Construction Charter, liaison with DTI on the
Procurement of Professional Services, CPD, the
internal working of the SAACE Council and Head Office
and the future and updating of fee scales.
<BR><BR>Previously only the Annual General Meeting was
held by the branch which coincided with the
Presidential Visit. In an effort to make the NW branch
more active, it was decided to have an additional
branch visit, which would be split up between the
three areas viz. Klerksdorp, Rustenburg and Mafikeng,
where most of our members are active. Ben and I
visited these three areas and presented the same
information to the members present. Unfortunately two
of the meetings had to take place within office hours.
This might have been the reason that the attendance
was not too good. In any event, those present had a
lot of questions on the different topics, and some
fruitful discussions took place. <BR><BR>Thanks to all
of you who attended. I hope the information shared was
of value.<BR><BR>
