My contribution this week is going to be rather short because by the time you read this I will have left for Durban for the annual presidential visit to KZN. We will have attended a client/member cocktail function on the 19 April and, in addition, will have met with SABTACO in preparation for a joint visit to Ethekweni Metropolitan Council. I will report on the outcome of these meetings in the next e-news on the 4 May.

The staff and the Directorate are a lot more relaxed now that we have survived our ISO9001:2000 3-year re-certification audit by DEKRA. A lot of work went into preparing for this audit, particularly by Johan van Schalkwyk, our Management Representative for Quality. It seems that we have done very well making all the effort really worthwhile.

Construction South Africa (CSA) is still alive and well with many of their Functional Committees having met over the last couple of weeks namely those dealing with Empowerment and Sustainability. More importantly there was a meeting on 17th April to introduce CSA to the National Minister of Public Works. Cecil Rose as President represented us, the main idea of this meeting was to introduce this new body representing all business organisations in the construction industry sector and get her endorsement and approval for our future plans and strategic intent.

Unfortunately, our Procurement Indaba will have to be deferred to the last quarter of this year, it seems. There are still a number of issues relating to procurement that remain unresolved between Department of Trade and Industry and National Treasury. You will have noticed some of the commentary in the national press surrounding the Minister of Finance. At this stage we expect to be given some clarity towards the end of June but until there is more certainty it would be a waste of time convening the Indaba.

Finally, another reminder - please refer to our MIS survey that has been uploaded onto our website.

'Til next time.

Graham Pirie

Breakfast with a Student - The SAACE YPF Committee has been invited by Building Woman Magazine Editor, Mahadi Moloi, to join her on the 24 May, 2007 at the Michaelangelo Hotel when she will be hosting a 'breakfast with a student' event. The breakfast will be followed by a visit to Rooms on View, which is a South African leading décor and design exhibition taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The objective of the breakfast is to create role models and mentors for girl students studying towards careers in engineering, construction and mining and also to give them an opportunity to network with women holding senior positions in these previously male dominated industries.

2007 SAACE Directory of Firms - I am pleased to inform you that the Directory of firms is going to print on Thursday, 27th April and should be ready for distribution in the third week of May. Member firms who have not yet submitted their Annual Declarations will have their information from last year repeated.

Voluntary Sponsorship - Each year the winner of the Young Engineer of the Year Award receives the prize of a trip to attend the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) Conference. The 2006 FIDIC Conference was held in Budapest, Hungary and the FIDIC Conference this year is being held in Singapore.

For the second consecutive year, SEW Eurodrive will be sponsoring the trip for the winner of the Young Engineer of the Year Award and their attendance of the FIDIC Conference. The Association would like to call upon member firms to make a voluntary contribution to sponsor an additional trip for the Chairperson of the Young Professionals Forum (YPF) to also attend the FIDIC Conference. This will allow the YPF Chairperson to impart the knowledge and best practices that he/she receives at this prestigious international conference to other young professionals within the Association.

In order to achieve this goal the Association is looking for 10 member firms to sponsor an amount of R5000 each. Member firms who become voluntary sponsors will be acknowledged at the Awards ceremony, in Inside Track and the Association's eNews.

For a voluntary sponsorship form please contact Siphokazi Momoti on (011) 463-2022 or via e-mail on siphom@ saace.co.za. We have only 10 sponsorships available. So please hurry and fill in the attached voluntary sponsorship form in order not to miss this great opportunity.

Contact Siphokazi Momoti at (011) 463-2022 or email siphom@saace.co.za

The International Business Development Section experienced some important developments.

Firstly the MIS for the period July to December 2006 confirmed the fee earnings outside of RSA had reached a figure of R532 million.

During a quarterly meeting of the Export Council we met with the newly appointed Deputy Director General of the Trade and Investment section of the DTI. My colleagues and I were very excited by what we heard in terms of the strong support for the Export Councils. Exports have been bumped up in Government's priority listing as the increasing deficit in the current account can best be addressed through increased exports.

The International Marketing Council has come to the party and will be assisting in preparing a high level international branding campaign for the Engineering and Technology Sector of the country. Members of the IBDS will be approached shortly to share their success stories for possible inclusion in the effort.

Currently, we are confirming the details of a planned return visit to the African Development Bank. This visit will be different in the sense that it will have a shorter programme at the Bank, but will also include a programme of meetings with Tunisian companies. The visit will take place against a backdrop of the donors having created an Infrastructure Consortium, and the appointment of the former CEO of the DBSA as a Vice President, to take charge of this initiative and Nepad.
