We are celebrating some strong, female leaders in the engineering industry this month, in recognition of the great role they play in the consulting engineering industry. In this feature we profile Malani Padayachee-Saman, Vee Munnery, Logashri Sewnarain and Zeenat Ghoor.

Malani Padayachee-Saman
As a first-mover, Malani founded Malani Padayachee and Associates (MPA) 23 years ago. This consulting engineering firm was a 100% black women owned and managed organisation, and held a broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) level 1 status.

In August 2020, MPA and investment holding company, Motseng Women Investments announced the acquisition of 100% equity of Mott MacDonald Africa (Pty) Ltd, the South African engineering entity of Mott MacDonald. MPA was rebranded as MPAMOT (Pty) Ltd (pronounced M.P.A.MOT). Malani was appointed as the chief executive officer and Ipeleng Mkhari as the chair of the board of directors.

Over the years, Malani has gained industry recognition for her excellence in engineering design and her dedication to growing the industry and investing in the development of young engineers. As a respected female-owned company in a male-dominated sector, she spearheads and advocates for quality and integrity whilst also ensuring gender mainstreaming in the industry.

In the past 27 years, Malani Padayachee-Saman has distinguished herself as an exemplary engineer and business leader. This statement is confirmed when we consider the four areas that form the foundation of an exemplary engineer: technical engineering competence; leadership and skills transfer in the establishment of MPA Consulting Engineers; inspiring and developing future engineers; and transforming the engineering industry.

Her active involvement in various local and international societies reinforces her dedication to continual professional development and knowledge sharing. Growth and advancement of young people motivates her and most of her management portfolios are linked to this natural affinition for people, even extending her role as a mentor beyond her company boundaries.
