Over the years CESA
YPF has grown in stature and numbers with membership steadily
increasing. August 2014 brought in new leadership and a shifted
focus. CESA initiatives have seen an increase in participation from YPs
at Branch and National level.

The CESA YPF was well represented at the 2014 GAMA Annual Conference held in Mozambique. The GAMA
Conference is the annual gathering of consulting engineering member associations in Africa. The GAMA YPF
celebrated its first year in operation with a YPF function preceding the conference for a meet and greet with
the GAMA directorate. This gathering was also aimed at encouraging the formation of YPF’s in other African
Member Associations. The conference focused on “Local involvement in major projects for sustainability”
where Tafadzwa Mukwena delivered a presentation entitled ”Prepared to Lead” focusing on holistic capacity
building in Africa.

The 2014 CESA YPF Job Shadow Initiative (JSI) proved to be more than just a poster competition, but an
empowerment initiative aimed at growing engineering skills in South Africa and showcasing “A Day in the
Life of a Consulting Engineer”. CESA YPF wishes to congratulate the many firms that participated in the JSI
Initiatives and to those who entered posters into the competition including:
Aurecon ILISO Consulting PRDW
Bigen Africa Infraconsult Royal HaskoningDHV
Bosch Stemele MNA SA SMEC South Africa
Engineering Advice & Services MPA UWP
GIBB PH Bagale

CESA YPF congratulates ILISO Consulting as overall winners, followed by Royal HaskoningDHV and GIBB
as runners up.

Congratulations to CESA’s Young Engineer of the Year 2014 Makotsene Makgalamele from HHO Africa.

The 2nd Annual CESA YPF Young Professionals Sustainability Imbizo, brought together 120 like-minded
YP’s from across the country to discuss and share ideas on Sustaining the Future of Engineering. This event
also marked the 10th anniversary of the CESA YPF. The 2-day Imbizo focused on bringing sustainability into
the engineering design process with application of FIDIC and CESA Sustainability Frameworks, a session on
ethics and corruption with Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka, a joint session with CESA Council on Advocacy, followed by
a session on YP issues with a focus on the outcomes of the 2014 CESA YPF National Survey. The imbizo
concluded with a session of academic papers on client satisfaction levels, leadership styles and the gap
between graduate competencies and expectations of the built environment industry in SA. The need for a feedback mechanism
from YP’s of member firms was highlighted when YPF WC aimed to redefine the Golden Thread issues in the
Western Cape.
